Singing in Zambia is a really big deal. Culturally it has been used to pass on traditions or as a means of teaching. Pastors decide a bible text for the year, and the churches write new music each year for an annual Sunday School conference. They compete based on how scriptural the song is, how original the melody is, the quality of harmony, and how uniform the ‘marching’ is.
The quality of their music shows their love and dedication to it. The fact that church members of every church are willing to write biblical music is a testimony to the dedication of the Zambia churches to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Each time I see and hear them sing, my heart longs to return and learn to make a joyful noise with them. I long to take the Gospel into areas of Zambia that still do not have a Gospel witness, that they might occupy some of their time writing and singing songs that teach the scripture, uplift Christ, and call men to repentance!
